DUMAGUETE City – The Canberra Buglas Region (CBR) Soccer Society girls’ Under-17 squad saw their unbeaten march crumble in agonizing fashion, falling to Tanjay City Football Club in a penalty shootout, 3-1, in the semifinals of the 2nd Corbo Invitational Soccer Cup.
CBR, which swept the elimination round with a spotless 5-0-0 record, battled Tanjay FC to a scoreless draw under soggy conditions at Ang Tay Golf and Country Club. But the Buglas girls faltered at the spot, missing key kicks as Tanjay advanced and eventually captured the championship against Leon Kilat FC.
The squad overcame torrential rains during the eliminations, but the waterlogged field in the semis disrupted their passing game and turned near-goals into frustration, with multiple shots ricocheting off the post.
“This tournament proves that the soccer ball is indeed round,” said tournament organizer Coach Andy Mananquil of Football Kings United.
Mananquil noted that the event also doubled as the 17th birthday celebration of Christian Corbo and a tribute to Buglas Futbol’s silver medal finish in the 33rd Kanga Cup in Australia.
CBR drew strength from Gardenville United Football Club, Inc., the Filipino Canberra Community, GoTyme Bank, and Philippine Airport Ground Support Solutions. The team was mentored by Coaches Earl Bona, Ron Molequin, Beatrize Semillano, and Red Yasay, with Technical Director Coach Jiff Lomugdang.
Leading the cast were standouts Jhayne Elainne Dalogdog, Claudia Elise Montinola, Renee Gavriel Animathea Lomugdang, Shanel Dominique Molequin, and Kelsy Skye Anub, backed by Nathalie Rhaine Andres, Yannah Marie Amar, Angel Nicole Segovia, Chloe Belisse Pasana, Hushlee Lhannia De Larrazabal, Marinel Gonzales, Ysabel Anara Yasay, Maxene Dominique Sison, and Lize Ibañez./PN
