MANILA – National University Bulldogs snapped a three-game losing skid and finished the first round of UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball eliminations with a 3-4 win-loss record.

Rodolfo Alejandro anchored Bulldogs’ fourth quarter run to score 77-70 against University of the Philippines Maroons.

Alejandro finished with 12 points – 8 coming in the final quarter – along with six rebounds and seven assists at the Sunday match in SM Mall of Asia Arena.

At a 58-all deadlock, Alejandro ignited a huge Bulldogs run with three inside hits to build a 67-62 edge. Maroons quickly responded with back-to-back triples from Andres Desiderio to tie the count at 70-all.

Alejandro broke the tie with a strong drive to the hoop before Matt Salem converted a triple and rookie Jordan Bartlett drained two free throws for Bulldogs’ 7-point lead.

Salem contributed double-double 21 points and 10 rebounds while rookie center Issa Gaye finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for Bulldogs, which is currently on fifth place.

“UP fought really hard, and we were both in a situation that we needed the win,” said Bulldogs head coach Jamike Jarin. “We are just happy that after 40 minutes of basketball, we came out lucky and we got the game.”

Desiderio top-scored with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks while Diego Dario contributed season-high 11 points for Maroons, which slid to 3-4.

It was the third consecutive loss for UP, which was decimated with the injury of rookie guard Jun Manzo in the third quarter, after starting the season at 3-1./PN
