NEWLY-CROWNED Oriental and Pacific and Boxing Federation (OPBF) bantamweight titlist Mark John Yap recently drew attention on social media after revealing that he’s been constantly assaulted by his own trainer in Japan.
In a lengthy post on Facebook, the Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental-native Yap narrated the abuses done to him by his own trainer in several instances since last year.
“Unang beses nangyari ‘yung pananakit sa akin last year mga December sinipa ako pero hindi naman masakit kaya pinalampas ko,” said Yap, who started fighting in Japan four years ago.
“Tapos nung Feb. 3, pinalo ako sa ulo ilang beses tapos sabay yong t-shirt ko sa dibdib pinag hunger nya ako (kinwelyuhan),” added Yap. “Nagalit siya dahil mabagal daw ‘yung kilos ko nung tinatawag ako ng boss namin.”
“Sa totoo lang, naisipan kong lumaban noong mga oras na ‘yun dahil alam ko namang boxer ako ay may kakayahan ako. Ang kaso siyam sila at nag iisa lang akong Filipino baka pagtulungan ako,” added the Filipino boxer.
Meanwhile, retired Filipino boxer and now trainer Joven Jorda intervened between the warring camps when he made his way to talk to Yap’s trainers on the real incident.
In an interview with the Buzzer Beater, the Ilonggo trainer said the incident between Yap and his trainer was the result of a “miscommunication” when the Filipino allegedly disrespected his Japanese boss.
“Nakausap ko na ‘yung trainer, unang una nanghingi siya ng sorry dun sa pananakit kay Mark John,” said Jorda. “Nasa kultura kasi ng mga Hapon na kung may taong mataas ang katungkulan, dapat yuyuko ka bilang respeto.”
“Nahuli raw nung trainer itong si Mark John na hindi yumuyuko sa boss niya kaya siya binatukan,” Jorda added. “Sinabihan ko rin ‘yung Japanese trainer na magpasensya kay Mark John dahil Filipino ‘yan kaya hindi pa masyadong pamilyar sa kaugalian nila.”
“Alam rin naman nung trainer niya na mali ‘yung nagawa nila kaya humingi sila ng pasensya,” Jorda said. “Ako kinausap ko na si Mark John. Nakikita ko naman na magbabalik rin sa dati ‘yung relasyon nila bilang trainer and boxer.”

Rudy Roque of Navy-Standard Insurance was still a teenager when two-time Tour champion Renato Dolosa told him he had the potential to be a cycling a star. Fast forward to now, the 25-year-old rider is close to making it a reality.
In the ongoing 2017 Ronda Pilipinas, Roque came up with a pair of second place finishes to seize the solo overall individual lead that put him in primed position to snare perhaps his biggest victory in his career.
“He told me I could be somebody someday, he was the one who opened the doors for me,” Roque said referring to Dolosa, who travelled all the way to Tibo, Bataan to get the then teenager to play for the latter’s American Vynil-LPGMA team.
From there, Roque blossomed and even placed an impressive ninth place in the first staging of this annual race and consistently figured in the Top 20 of the next editions.
After two stages, Roque is on top with an aggregate time of five hours, three minutes and three seconds, leading Navy teammates Ronald Lomotos and Archie Cardana, clocking in at 5:03:23 and 5:03:31, respectively.
He is more than five minutes ahead of the big guns headed by last year’s champion and fellow Navyman Jan Paul Morales, who is at No. 17 with 5:08:11, and Kinetix Lab-Army’s Cris Joven, who is at No. 18 with 5:08:18.
“If we’re still on top after the next three stages, then I can say we have a strong chance of winning it all this year,” said Roque. “We will make sure that I will remain on top until the end of the race.”/PN
