BARRING any hitch in negotiations, four Manila-based women’s volleyball squads are set to play in a series of exhibition matches in Iloilo and Bacolod cities later this year.
Negotiations are underway to possibly bring the four volleyball teams, which are playing in a prominent league in Manila, to play in a pocket tournament, a source told Buzzer Beater.
“Nag-uusap na iyong mga parties involved para doon sa exhibition match,” said the source. “Malaki naman ang posibilidad na matuloy dahil kasalukuyan namang naka-break iyong liga na nilalaruan nila.”
“Pero iyon nga lang, sakaling matuloy iyan, iyon ilan doon sa four teams undermanned. Most of their players are currently with their schools since NCAA and UAAP seasons are just around the corner,” added the source.
Just last month, Ilonggo and Bacolodnon volleyball fans were able to enjoy the two-day exhibition matches between UAAP women’s volleyball runner-up Ateneo Lady Eagles and Perlas-BanKo Lady Spikers.
“Fingers crossed lang ang mga volleyball fans diyan sa Iloilo and Bacolod. Hopefully, matuloy itong exhibition matches since it is very rare for them to see the volleyball players they idolize up close,” said the source.
NLEX’S TIONGSON
Juan Miguel Tiongson was on the verge of ending his basketball career last year after getting cut by Blackwater Elite – until NLEX Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao called him up.
Just like the other players who were given a second chance by Guiao, the former Ateneo Blue Eagles point guard is slowly emerging as one of Road Warriors’ offensive threats.
Tiongson, the 12th overall pick in the 2014 PBA Rookie Draft by Elite, is having his best conference so far, averaging career-high 8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
On Sunday, Tiongson had his best game so far in his young PBA career after tallying career-best 21 points, including five 3-point conversions, in Road Warriors’ 109-99 win over GlobalPort Batang Pier.
“Muntikan na talaga akong mag-quit sa basketball. Ayoko na talagang maglaro after being cut by Blackwater,” said Tiongson. “Na-down siyempre kasi I worked hard naman and yet it didn’t work out.”
“I don’t want naman to get stuck sa D-League. I just want to give myself a chance. If it is there, it’s there. If it is not, it’s not,” added Tiongson, who has earned his first-ever PBA Player of the Week citation.
Guiao said he gave Tiongson a second chance after seeing his stellar play while with AMA Online Education Titans in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup early this year.
“I noticed he was playing well in the D-League, and we needed a backup point guard at the time,” said Guiao. “I was able to see him at Blackwater before, and so I had a pretty good idea of what he can do.”
Tiongson hopes to continue his impressive showing for Road Warriors (7-2) in their last two assignments against TNT KaTropa on Sept. 13 and Star Hotshots on Sept. 24./PN
