Overachiever

BACOLOD Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts only wanted to represent Western Visayas well when it participated in the 2017 Rebisco Volleyball League – but it achieved more than that.

Right in its opening match, Thunderbolts scored a 20-25, 25-22, 25-19 upset over UAAP team Far Eastern University. The team followed it up with a 25-17, 25-23 sweep over University of San-Jose Recoletos.

After that the Bacolod City-based squad suffered back-to-back defeats to Holy Rosary College and De La Salle University-Lipa before ending the eliminations with a win over Angelicum Learning College 25-17, 25-18.

With its 3-2 win-loss record, Thunderbolts failed to reach the semifinals and had to settle for a battle-for-fifth game, which it won over University of Mindanao-Tagum 25-17, 19-25, 25-12.

“Like what I said, no one expected us to win four of our six games here. Even we were surprised,” said Jose Montalbo, Tay Tung’s vice chairman for sports. “We are here just to gain experience.”

“The players showed their heart and determination to win each game so I am proud for them,” he added. “Hopefully, we will get a chance again to participate her next year. We will come back stronger.”

Thunderbolts is now preparing for the Palarong Panlalawigan, which was scheduled later this month in Bacolod City.

To comply with the new International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) competition calendar, the Philippine Superliga (PSL) made significant changes in its schedule for 2018.

The PSL will now have the import-flavored Grand Prix as a season-opener from Feb. 17 to May 17, followed by the Challenge Cup beach volleyball tournament from May 26 to June 16.

The All-Filipino Conference will now be held from July 28 to Nov. 15 but will take a break from Sept. 17 to 23 to give way for the 6th AVC Asian Cup for Women in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The Invitational Conference, originally planned for summer, will now be from November to December, followed by another beach volleyball tournament to cap the year.

Between the Challenge Cup beach volleyball and All-Filipino conference is the AVC Asian Women’s Club Championship from July 11 to 18 in Oskemen, Kazakhstan, where the PSL is set to send its All-Star team anew.

“PSL made a bold move in compliance with that of the FIVB and the AVC, making it easier for teams to attract best foreign players for the Grand Prix as well as make their players available for international tournaments,” said PSL president Ramon Suzara.

“The PSL is a staunch supporter of the plans and programs of the FIVB and the AVC,” he added. “So we made the schedule change for the better of the league and also of the players.”/PN
