ANOTHER exciting basketball and volleyball league is set to unfold in Iloilo City when the 2017 Biron Cup Inter-municipality Basketball and Volleyball League opens this Saturday at the Barotac Nuevo Gym.
Tournament director Ruding Villaruz told the Buzzer Beater that a number of teams have participated in the men’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball events, which will use a home-and-away format.
“This is expected to be an exciting event with all the teams putting up a competitive lineup,” said Villaruz. “This is a first of its kind — 31 municipalities [and] one component city in one league.”
Villaruz also said there are 27 teams in men’s basketball, 19 in men’s volleyball and 11 in women’s volleyball. The men’s basketball and volleyball are divided into four brackets, and the women’s volleyball into two based on geographical location.
“We will adopt a home-and-away format. Each team in the basketball and volleyball were divided based on geographical location so that sports fans will have a chance to witness the action live.”

Rumor or fact: Is it true that a not-so-popular sporting drink retracted its support to the national women’s volleyball team after one of its players was not included in the Final 18 lineup?
A source told the Buzzer Beater that lobbying for one of its two players from the 24-woman pool to be inserted by head coach Francis Vicente in the Final 18 was not granted as there were more talented volleyball players than her.
Just to be clear, the other player of the not-so-popular sporting drink failed to land a spot in the Final 18 after sustaining a serious back injury while playing in a volleyball league.
“Ipinagpipilitan nila na maisama iyong player nila sa lineup pero hindi napagbigyan dahil ang gusto ni coach Francis ay iyong maaasahan niya, e marami pa namang mas malakas kumpara doon sa player na ipinagtutulakan nila,” said the source.
“Ayon, noong malaman na out iyong player nila, biglang binawi iyong suporta nila sa national team. Mabuti na lang iyong mas sikat na sporting drink agad ang pumalit. So, sino ang nawalan?”

Jericho Cruz earned his first Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week citation after serving as the catalyst in Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ come-from-behind 118-112 win over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings last Friday.
