FANS of college sports were disheartened when the supposed relationship between a varsity basketball player (VBP) and varsity volleyball player (VVP), who come from the same university, did not work out.

A source told the Buzzer Beater that VBP, who looks like the son of a very famous and still active Bacolodnon basketball cager, has a great infatuation toward VVP, who has other preferences.

Track legend Christabel Martes turned back the hands of time as she delivered a throwback performance during the 2017 Ayala Philippine National Open Invitational Athletics Championships held at the Ilagan City Sports Complex in Isabela.

A two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, Martes revived her glorious national team career by clinching two gold medals in the women’s 10,000-meter run and the women’s 5,000-meter run.

After going into semi-retirement to run her baking business and take care of her 10-year-old daughter, Martes stormed to chase a slot in the national team that will see action in the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur this August.

Martes, who won gold in the 2001 and 2005 SEA Games before going into hiatus in 2009, said she can still compete at a higher level and keep in step with her younger foes in a 42-kilometer race.

“I can still make it to the national team for as long as I can sustain my training,” said the 37-year-old Martes, who still holds the national record of 34:40.3 in the women’s 10,000-meter run that she tallied in 2001.

“It all depends on how I can maintain my conditioning,” she added. “I have good chance to compete in the 42-kilometer event in the SEA Games given the right training and conditioning.”

The resurgence of Martes could be a good addition for the Philippine team in the upcoming SEA Games, where it aims to improve on its sixth place finish during the 2015 edition./PN
