SAN JOSE, Antique – Gov. Rhodora Cadiao looked into the problems in the construction of housing units in the province.

Cadiao, chairwoman of the Provincial Housing Board, invited officials from the National Housing Authority (NHA), heads and representatives of concerned housing agencies, and project contractors during the board’s meeting on Oct. 11.

The meeting aimed to shed light on the cause of delays in the housing projects.

Cadiao stressed that there are thousands of housing units in various towns in the province that are already completed but many still remain unoccupied.

She said the beneficiaries would not transfer due to the lack of basic amenities like water systems and electricity in the housing areas.

According to the contractors, they already coordinated with the respective local water units in the areas. They said the installation of water sources is not yet “feasible” and “will take time.”

The contractors introduced deep wells with submersible water pumps as the areas’ alternative water sources.

Engineer Mario Rochel Cejar, officer-in-charge of the Technical Department of the Antique Electric Cooperative (Anteco), said they are ready to install power lines in the housing areas but they cannot start without the contractors paying for their services.

Only four contractors have paid Anteco for the installation of power lines, the rest haven’t, Cejar said.

The number of those who were not able to pay has yet to be verified as of this writing.

Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member Errol Santillan, chairman of the SP committee on housing and land use, specifically brought up concerns over the housing projects in Barangay Guia, Pandan, Antique.

Santillan said the location of the housing units is far from the beneficiaries’ livelihood, which is fishing.

Cadiao will conduct an ocular inspection in the area with members of the Provincial Housing Board and NHA officials this November. (With Antique Public Information Officer/PN)
