MANILA – After bagging gold in the 29th Southeast Asian Games, Dines Dumaan of the Philippines had another golden finish in the 3rd Asian Pencak Silat Championship – World Martial Arts Festival in Chungju, South Korea.
A native of Panitan, Capiz, Dumaan won the Class A Male Tanding category, beating his Singaporean foe in the finals late Monday.
“I dedicate my gold medal to my countrymen and to my family,” said the 21-year old Dumaan, who was forced to stop attending Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion in Roxas City to focus on honing his skills.
Meanwhile, Ilongga Trisha Marie Villalon Leda settled for a bronze medal in the women’s event.
It was the first international medal of the Iloilo Science and Technology University alumna.
The World Martial Arts Festival is organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to globalize Taekgyeon, a traditional Korean martial art, under the theme “Harmony Between the 5,000-year-old National Spirit and World Martial Arts.”
Prior to his campaign in South Korea, Dumaan captured the gold medal in men’s tanding pencak silat 45-50kg event at the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, defeating Firman of Indonesia 4-1.
That gold medal feat was extra special – it was the Philippines’ first SEA Games gold in pencak silat since Earl Buenviaje’s in the 2005 edition in the country./PN
