ILOILO – The Iloilo Provincial School Board (IPSB) has a budget of P150 million this year.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. approved the allocation which is P50 million higher than the board’s 2019 budget of P100 million.

Provincial Administrator Suzette Mamon, secretary of the IPSB, said the 2020 budget would be used to improve public school buildings and facilities, procure learning materials and equipment, install potable water systems in schools, and purchase sports equipment.

The goal, according to Mamon, is to improve the quality of education in Iloilo’s public schools.

In 2019, only P30 million of the IPBS’ P100-million was utilized. One factor was the “banning” during the election period, said Mamon.

“This year the governor wants the utilization of the IPBS budget maximized,” said Mamon.

The IPSB has been reorganized. Defensor as governor is the board chairman. His co-chair is Dr. Roel Bermejo, superintendent of schools. The members are:

* Vice Gov. Christine Garin, the chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlalwigan’s Committee on Education

* Provincial Board member Ma. Angelica Bianca Requinto, president of the provincial federation of the Sangguniang Kabataan

* Jean Maire Umadhay, provincial treasurer

* Rogelio Esguerra, representing the Iloilo Public School Teachers’ Association

* Jose Marie Bedro representing the non-academic personnel of public schools

* Engr. John Arcosa, president of the Federated Parents-Teachers and Community Association/PN
