ILOILO – The much-anticipated lighting ceremony of the “Christmas Village sa Makabagong Pilipinas” at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol Complex has been rescheduled to December 13, a week later than the original date of December 6.
The provincial government announced the postponement on Wednesday, citing a scheduling conflict for Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., who is set to attend a meeting called by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in Malacañang on December 6.
Department of Education secretary Jusn Edgardo “Sonny” Angara will serve as the guest of honor during the opening on December 13.
Defensor revealed that the provincial government is enhancing its Christmas celebration this year to position Iloilo as a premier holiday destination for tourists nationwide.
The “Christmas Village sa Makabagong Pilipinas” is envisioned as a festive wonderland for families and children, transforming the Capitol grounds into a vibrant Christmas haven.
“We want Iloilo to be known as a top destination in December. This Christmas Village is for the entire country, with children and families in mind,” Defensor said. “The Capitol of Iloilo is a place for everyone to enjoy the holidays.”
He emphasized that the celebration also aims to boost local tourism, which in turn stimulates economic growth.
“When tourism thrives, it creates business and employment opportunities, strengthening our economy,” the governor added.
The annual lighting ceremony has become a highlight of Iloilo’s holiday festivities, attracting large crowds eager to experience the province’s Christmas offerings.
The festivities will kick off with a lantern parade featuring Capitol employees grouped into five teams: Yellow Star, Blue Reindeer, Pink Advent Lights, Green Elves, and Red Santa.
A Trade Fair and Food Festival will run until December 29, showcasing local products and cuisines.
The Provincial Library and Archives Office will also organize a Christmas movie screening featuring local films.
On December 19, the celebration will culminate in a Year-End Assessment and Socio-Cultural Activity, during which the provincial government will recognize outstanding offices for their exemplary performance throughout the year.
