CAPIZ — The Provincial Government of Capiz commemorated the 129th anniversary of the martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal on December 30, in a ceremony spearheaded by the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO).

Held in front of the Provincial Capitol, the commemoration took place at the Rizal monument, symbolizing the hero’s enduring role in the country’s struggle for freedom and independence.

The program honored Rizal’s life, writings, and sacrifices, highlighting how his works awakened national consciousness and inspired Filipinos to challenge colonial rule. Participants reflected on Rizal’s vision of a united nation and his execution on December 30, 1896, which cemented his place in Philippine history.

Atty. Luvim Amores, Public Information Officer and concurrent head of the Provincial Human Resource Management Office, represented Governor Fredenil H. Castro during the ceremony.

In her address, Amores emphasized the values embodied by Rizal, reminding the audience that heroism is reflected in everyday actions.

“Heroism does not have to be loud. It has to be consistent, pure, and honest,” she said, encouraging attendees to live out these principles in their daily lives.

The ceremony included a floral offering at the foot of the Rizal monument as a tribute to the national hero and other Filipinos who sacrificed for the country’s freedom. Cultural presentations featuring traditional Filipino dances and music were also staged, fostering a sense of patriotism and national pride.

Among those who attended were Vice Governor James Magbanua; Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer Alphonsus Tesoro; Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Atty. Shiela Artillero; and Board Members Ma. Ivy Fundal, Trina Marie Ignacio, Cesar Yap, and Cecilio Fecundo.

Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Roel Bermejo of the Department of Education–Capiz led students in the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, underscoring the importance of instilling patriotism among the youth.

Members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines–Capiz Chapter, along with the Veterans Federation of the Philippines–Capiz Chapter, also joined the event, highlighting the shared responsibility of honoring the nation’s heroes and educating younger generations about their sacrifices.

The commemoration concluded with a call from provincial leaders for continued nationalism, civic engagement, and commitment to justice and peace, in keeping with the ideals espoused by Rizal./PN
