CAPIZ — Amid renewed discussions on the Nipah virus, the Capiz Provincial Government, through its Provincial Health Office (PHO), issued Health Advisory No. 1 on January 30, urging the public to remain informed and take necessary precautions against the zoonotic disease.
The Nipah virus is transmissible from animals to humans and has raised concern due to its potential spread through contact with the saliva, blood, or urine of infected fruit bats and other animals. Individuals may also be exposed through the consumption of contaminated fruits or food products.
Health authorities advised the public to exercise caution in areas where fruit bats and similar animals are prevalent, particularly in locations with a history of infection.
Symptoms of Nipah virus infection may resemble those of influenza, including fever, headache, cough, and general body weakness. The PHO emphasized that there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine for the virus, making prevention and early detection vital.
The advisory cited a 2015 outbreak in Mindanao, where 15 cases were reported and linked to the consumption of contaminated animals. While recent reports indicate a rise in cases in India, officials confirmed that no Nipah virus cases have been recorded in the Philippines to date.
To help protect the public, the Capiz Provincial Government advised residents to wear protective gear such as gloves, boots, and face masks when handling or caring for animals, particularly those that appear sick. The public was also urged to purchase meat only from authorized and properly inspected markets or establishments to reduce the risk of contamination. In addition, residents were reminded to practice proper food safety by thoroughly washing and properly cooking food, especially fruits and vegetables that may have been exposed to animals or contaminated areas.
The PHO urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, stressing that continuous monitoring and strict adherence to health protocols are crucial to maintaining community safety.
Authorities also encouraged the public to stay informed through reliable sources and to follow the guidance of health professionals, noting that public cooperation is essential in safeguarding the well-being of all Capisnons.
