CAPIZ – The provincial government officially launched the P1-million Sustainable Livelihood Project in Barangay Navitas, Panay town on July 16, aiming to boost economic opportunities for local fishermen and their families.

The initiative, led by Gov. Fredenil H. Castro under his Sustainable Livelihood Program established in 2023, seeks to promote rural development and reduce poverty. The primary beneficiaries of the project are members of the Barangay Navitas Fisherfolk Association Inc. (BNFAI).

Funded with P1 million from the provincial government, the project includes the opening of a fully stocked fishing supply store offering essential equipment such as nets, bait, and other fishing tools. In addition, the association has acquired a new fishing boat to help members reach richer fishing grounds and increase their catch.

In a message delivered on his behalf by Barangay Captain Vicente Regalado, Gov. Castro reaffirmed his strong support for the project. He stated that if it proves effective in improving the beneficiaries’ livelihoods, his administration is prepared to extend further assistance to advance community welfare and economic resilience.

BNFAI President Precy Aravalo expressed her gratitude to the governoro, Regalado, treasurer Alvin Verdaloza, and all members who contributed to the project’s successful implementation.

Beneficiaries lauded the initiative as a significant boost to their community. They noted that having local access to fishing supplies not only saves time and effort but also allows them to focus more on their work, thereby improving productivity and income.

Regalado also assured residents of continued support and close monitoring of the project to ensure its sustainability and long-term benefits.
The launching event was attended by representatives from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, including Provincial Fisheries Coordinator Joey Dela Cruz, Consultant Sylvia Dela Cruz, and Chief of the Fisheries Division Ramie Lyn Bañarez. They echoed the governor’s commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive development across the province./PN
