CAPIZ — As the holiday season approaches, local authorities in this province are strictly enforcing the prohibition on selling firecrackers to minors in a bid to prevent injuries and ensure a safer celebration for the community.
The initiative is in line with Republic Act No. 7183, or the Firecracker Act, which sets stringent rules on the manufacture, sale, and use of firecrackers nationwide.
In a local radio interview, Police Captain Merry Chris Dela Cruz, Public Information Officer of the Capiz Police Provincial Office (CPPO), emphasized the importance of the crackdown.
“The primary objective of this prohibition is to safeguard the safety and well-being of young individuals during the festive period,” she said.
Authorities noted that the measure is especially crucial due to incidents in previous years involving minors who suffered burns, lacerations, and even permanent vision loss as a result of improper firecracker use.
Captain Dela Cruz clarified that while some firecrackers are permitted for adults, these items remain prohibited for minors. Allowed firecrackers for adult use include relatively low-risk items such as baby rockets, bawang, small triangulos, and pulling-of-strings.
On the other hand, high-risk pyrotechnics such as super lolo, atomic big triangulo, goodbye Philippines, and whistle bombs remain strictly banned due to their potential to cause severe injury.
Violators face stiff penalties under the law, including fines ranging from P20,000 to P30,000 and possible imprisonment. Local police units have been mobilized to intensify monitoring and enforcement, particularly in areas with traditionally high firecracker activity during the New Year season.
In light of these restrictions, Dela Cruz encouraged the public to explore safer ways to celebrate.
“We urge families and individuals to consider safer options to ring in the New Year, such as using sparklers or other non-explosive devices that can still create a festive atmosphere without jeopardizing safety,” she said.
Local authorities are also preparing awareness campaigns and community programs to further educate residents on the dangers of firecrackers and promote safety-conscious holiday practices.
By fostering a culture of responsibility and vigilance, officials hope to significantly reduce firecracker-related injuries and ensure that the holiday season remains a joyful and accident-free celebration.
