ROXAS City – Members of a transport group in Capiz province did not join the two-day transport strike that started yesterday.
Pinagkaisahang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON)-Capiz Chapter president Joebert Carandang said they could have joined the protest if they were given enough time to prepare.
PISTON members in the province attended a Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) seminar on Oct. 14, Carandang said.
The seminar was one of the requirements for the issuance of franchise by the LTFRB.
“In as much as we would want to participate in the protest, the lack of time and preparation did not allow us,” Carandang said.
Carandang said that Malacanang’s declaration of suspension of classes in public and private schools and work in government offices on Sunday implied that President Rodrigo Duterte was “shaken” by the transport strike.
Carandang said the public utility jeepney phaseout that Duterte endorses is a “fake modernization program.”
“We still have plenty of transport strikes to be held and by that time, we are ready to join until Duterte scraps the program,” he added.
Most public utility vehicle drivers and operators in the province are member of PISTON-Capiz Chapter./PN
