CEBU CITY – The Police Regional Office 7 (PRO-7) ordered the deactivation of all its drug enforcement units (DEUs) in Central Visayas.
This was after President Rodrigo Duterte’s order making the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) the sole agency to conduct anti-drug operations in the country.
Senior Superintendent Jonathan Cabal, chief of the PRO-7 Intelligence Division, said he already sent directives to all city and provincial police offices, ordering them to disband their respective DEUs.
However, Cabal said the dissolution of DEUs did not mean that the police will no longer engage in the campaign against illegal drugs.
The police are mandated to gather intelligence. Cabal said they will forward all accumulated information to the PDEA, including their drug watch list.
And if necessary, the police will extend assistance to the PDEA, especially during hot pursuit and checkpoint operations, Cabal added.
He also warned drug lords, pushers and users of their continued surveillance on them.
Cabal did not criticize Duterte’s decision and said he “believes in the President’s wisdom.” (PNA/PN)
