MANILA – Jayson Castro has rejected several offers to play as an import in China to suit up once again for the TNT Katropa in the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup, set to open on Nov. 20.
Castro, who recently retired from playing with the Gilas Pilipinas, has agreed to stay with the Katropa after signing a three-year maximum contract extension worth P15 million.
Player-agent Danny Espiritu confirmed that Castro has been receiving feelers from at least three teams in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) but no formal offers were made.
“We told the Chinese teams that if they are serious in getting Jayson, they should submit a formal offer to us. We gave them until last Thursday but no offers came so we decided to re-sign with TNT,” Espiritu said.
“We considered the CBA teams since one team has sent feelers that they will pay Jayson P14 million for a three-month contract but until now there is no formal offer,” he added.
Castro, who previously played as import for the Singapore Slingers, has expressed elation after signing the contract extension with the Katropa instead of playing overseas.
“Triple max ang saya,” said Castro who watched the Katropa score a 91-85 victory over the Star Hotshots in their tune-up match on Saturday at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in Ateneo de Manila.
Aside from Castro, the Katropa was also able to sign up veterans Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes, Danny Seigle, Aaron Aban, Alex Nuyles, and Dylan Ababou, as well as rookies Roger Pogoy and Levi Hernandez.
However, a source told Panay News that Ababou is unlikely to stay with the Katropa on opening day as he is set to be shipped to sister team Blackwater Elite in exchange for Frank Golla./PN
