AS FILIPINOS observe All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on November 1 and 2, respectively, families gather in cemeteries to remember their departed loved ones, offer prayers and celebrate the enduring bonds of family and faith.  Thousands of miles away, in Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre offers pilgrims a different yet equally profound experience of prayer, reflection and remembrance.  Stepping inside the centuries-old church is an overwhelming experience. But the opportunity to pray beside the Tomb of Jesus Christ makes the visit even more meaningful, evoking a deep sense of reverence, gratitude and reflection that words can hardly express.  Located in Jerusalem’s Old City, the church welcomes pilgrims and visitors from different countries and backgrounds. They come to pray, give thanks, seek spiritual comfort and offer their personal intentions at one of Christianity’s most sacred sites.  Built in the fourth century under the direction of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, following the identification of the site associated with Christ’s death and burial by his mother, Empress Helena, the church is traditionally believed to encompass the places of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, burial and resurrection.  At its heart is the Edicule, a shrine enclosing the tomb traditionally believed to be where Jesus was laid to rest. Within it is the limestone burial bed associated with Christ’s resting place, drawing pilgrims into a moment of prayer and contemplation.  For Christians, the significance of the site extends beyond its historical and religious importance. It stands as a powerful symbol of the Passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ — the foundation of Christian hope in eternal life.  This message resonates deeply during All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, when the faithful honor the saints and pray for their departed loved ones. While these observances center on remembering those who have died, they also invite reflection on the Christian promise of life beyond death.  At the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the experience of standing near the tomb traditionally associated with Jesus offers a poignant reminder that grief and remembrance can coexist with hope. Prayer becomes a way of entrusting loved ones to God's mercy while finding strength in the promise of the resurrection.  As Filipino families visit cemeteries this Undas, lighting candles, offering flowers and gathering in prayer, the pilgrimage in Jerusalem offers a timeless reflection: remembrance is not simply about looking back on lives that have ended. It is also about sustaining faith, finding comfort in prayer and carrying the love and memories of those who have passed on./PN
