MANILA – Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano is seen to get appointed as Department of Foreign Affairs secretary this year.
Days after winning in the May 2016 election, President Rodrigo Duterte said he would appoint Cayetano as Foreign Affairs chief.
Foreign Affairs secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. plans to return to the United States. He teaches law at the University of Hawaii, Duterte had said.
“He is on contract as professor,” the President had said. “Nakiusap naman ako because he was my roommate [when we were in] law school.”
Cayetano ran for vice president alongside Duterte but lost to Leni Robredo.
Under the Constitution, losing candidates are prohibited from getting any government appointment within a year after the election.
“I told the President I will help him in any capacity,” Cayetano said. “So by April or May, pupuntahan ko siya. Kung ano’ng sabihin niyang assignment ko ay malugod kong tatanggapin.”
Cayetano promised to help the Duterte administration carry out genuine reforms.
“Kasi kumukuha ka ng posisyon para makadagdag ka, hindi para makabawas,” said the senator from Taguig City. “Kung sa tingin ng Pangulo meron akong maidagdag sa departamento (Foreign Affairs), malugod kong tatanggapin.”/PN
