MANILA – Criminals involved in illegal drugs should be punished with death, according to Sen. Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian.
Gatchalian filed Senate Bill 1294, which seeks to amend the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 by providing a quantitative standard in meting out a death sentence for drug offenses.
“Before the faith of our people in government is completely eroded, and the trust in its ability to maintain peace and order is totally undermined, it is incumbent that we reimpose the death penalty upon the people at the top who bring in and distribute large amounts of illegal drugs,” the senator said.
Such criminals ignore the “disastrous consequences” of drug trafficking for their own “disgusting” personal advantage, he said.
Under the bill, death penalty shall be carried out on those found guilty of possessing, selling, distributing, importing, and manufacturing the following prohibited drugs in prescribed quantities:
* 10,000 grams or more of marijuana
* 1,000 grams or more of shabu
* 200 grams or more of opium, morphine, heroin, cocaine, cocaine hydrochloride, marijuana resin, marijuana resin oil, ecstacy, and LSD, and other drugs as determined by the Dangerous Drugs Board
The measure also aims to increase fines and penalties imposed on offenses involving possession of small amounts.
“President [Rodrigo] Duterte and I are both mayors at heart, so we come from the same perspective,” said Gatchalian.
“As local chief executives, we have both seen firsthand the kind of damage the illegal drug trade can do to communities if drug lords and kingpins are allowed to continue their despicable operations with impunity,” he said./PN
