MANILA – Ceres Negros Football Club of the Philippines continued to write history in the 2017 AFC Cup after a 2-0 stunner over Home United of Singapore in the second leg of the zonal finals at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Jose Elmer Porteria and Manuel Ott scored a goal each for the Negros Occidental-based team, which topped the Southeast Asian zone division after winning the series with an aggregate score of 3-2.
Ceres’ goalkeeper Roland Muller had a notable defensive performance on Wednesday night for the Philippine squad, which became the first Filipino team to represent Southeast Asia zone in the annual tournament.
Ceres quickly gained edge when Porteria scored off a cross in the second minute. Fernando Rodriguez had a chance to double the lead minutes later but his shot was blocked by Home United’s Hassan Sunny.
Just before halftime break, Ceres raised the advantage 2-0 with Ott curling his ball past the wall of Home United and into the top right corner of the target.
With a 2-0 lead, Ceres turned up its defense in the second half behind Kota Kawase and Muller, who foiled a number of goal attempts by Home United star Stipe Plazibat.
The victory will allow Ceres to represent the ASEAN in the tournament’s inter-zonal playoffs, where it will face Istiklol of Tajikistan, which topped the Central Asia zone.
Leg 1 of the inter-zonal playoffs will be played in Dushnabe on Aug. 22 while the second leg will be on Sept. 12 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City, where Ceres remains undefeated./PN
