CERES Negros got back on the winning track in the Philippines Football League as it clobbered JP Voltes Marikina 5-0 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Bienvenido Marañon fired two goals while Fernando Rodriguez, Iain Ramsay and Jose Elmer Porteria added a conversion each for the Negros Occidental-based club to tally its first win against JP Voltes in three matches this season.
Ceres was aggressive on the offensive end early on Saturday. Rodriguez converted from a pass by Porteria in the third minute. This was quickly followed by goals from Marañon and Ramsay minutes later for a 3-0 start.
Kouichi Belgira skipped past Roland Muller in what would have been JP Voltes’ chance at a goal but Ceres’ Kota Kawase blocked his shot. Ceres nearly raised the lead before halftime but Rodriguez’s shot was blocked, too.
Ceres started with the same intensity in the second half and managed to score as Porteria rebounded a Stephan Schrock miss before striking it to the back of the net for a 4-0 advantage.
After an exchange of misses, Ceres padded up its lead further with Marañon faking his defenders before evading JP Voltes’ keeper for an easy tap-in in the 80th.
“We went out with a different mentality, a different attitude,” said Ceres head coach Risto Vikadovic. “We need it because we need to recover from the last two games.”
Ceres stayed on third place with 45 points – 14 wins, three draws and four losses – while JP Voltes dropped to sixth with 28 points./PN
