CERES-University of Saint La Salle kicked off its title retention bid in the 2nd Sagay Men’s Open Championships with a 4-0 victory over University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) in Sagay National High School in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.

Regie Brenn Cisneros opened the scoring for Ceres on Saturday with a hit in the fifth minute. The defending champion pulled away in the second half with consecutive goals from Kjay Gedor and Ilemona Usman.

Reigning 2017 Negros Occidental Football Association Men’s Open champion Villa Angela FC also had a strong start after winning its first match and forcing a draw on its second.

Villa Angela scored 3-1 over Negros Selection with goals from Aldrin Dolino, Jaime Poderoso and JP Voltes Marikina player J Baguioro. Adonis Abela was the lone scorer for Negros Selection.

In its next match, Villa Angela settled for a 2-2 deadlock with UNO-R. Goals were from the former’s Orman Okunaiya and Archie Pamilar, and the latter’s Aldren Palomo, who scored twice.

Reigning UAAP men’s football champion Ateneo de Manila University, meanwhile, was held to a 1-1 draw by Sagay-North Negros Selection.

After a scoreless first half, Ateneo gained the lead with a goal from William Jay Grierson in the 53rd minute. Sagay-North Negros managed to force a draw with a late hit from Jasper Aguado.

The elimination round will be played until Jan. 9. The top two teams will advance to the finals on Jan. 10./PN
