CERES-University of St. La Salle and Ateneo de Manila University tightened their hold of the top two spots in the 2nd Sagay Men’s Open Championships in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
Ceres-USLS, the defending champion, stretched its undefeated record to three with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Negros Selection on Jan. 8 at the Sagay National High School field.
Negros Selection gained the early advantage on a sixth-minute goal by Mark Christian Gubatayao. Ceres-USLS tied the score in the 18th minute behind Oriel Carlie Tejada before taking the lead in the 59th courtesy of a Charles Barberan conversion.
On the other hand, Blue Eagles – the reigning UAAP men’s football champion – banked on a pair of conversions from national team member Javier Gayoso to score a 2-1 victory over Villa Angela FC.
Negros Selection recovered from its defeat to Ceres-USLS with a 3-1 victory over the struggling University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) to remain on third place.
Host Sagay-North Negros and Villa Angela FC shared fourth to fifth places with a win, a loss and a draw. UNO-R lands on the tail-end of the six-team games after dropping all of its matches so far./PN
