Check Bata ‘purok’ drainage, Bacolod engineers urged

BACOLOD City – The City Engineer’s Office was urged to check the drainage system in Purok Marapara II, Barangay Bata. Councilors believe it needs repair or rehabilitation.

The office should coordinate with barangay and purok officials, the Sangguniang Panlungsod said in a resolution.

“Long forgotten” was how Councilor Ricardo Tan, resolution proponent, described the Purok Marapara II drainage system.

This part of Bata, “among the fast-growing barangays” in the city, is “greatly affected” by the rainy season, said Tan.

Its canals “are already old, clogged and abandoned, making the entire place constantly wet because of water flowing from households,” the councilor said.

“The entire situation is unsanitary and not conducive to the growing local tourism,” said Tan. “The city has to address this situation now for the sake of sanitation and better living for residents therein.”

Earlier the city council also asked the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to “undertake necessary actions in preparation for the rainy season.”

State weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has released climate information covering the months of April to September this year.

Its Seasonal Climate Outlook showed the country will experience the gradual shift from northeast monsoon to southwest monsoon, the Sangguniang Panlungsod said.

Moreover the Interior department reminded local government units to “perform necessary actions” based on “Operation Listo” – disaster preparedness manuals that contain procedures on what local chief executives must do before, during and after disasters and calamities – said Councilor Cindy Rojas, resolution author.

“It is the duty of every local government unit to ensure the safety of its

Constituents,” Rojas said./PN
