ILOILO City – The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Region 6 will be investigating the death of the suspected assassin of a former mayor of Pulupandan, Negros Occidental.

It is CHR’s mandate to ensure that the suspect’s rights were not violated, said CHR director Atty. Jonie Dabuco yesterday.

Rammy Enojo was shot to death by policemen in Barangay Tambunac, Dingle, Iloilo on April 24.

The police claimed Enojo, charged for the killing of former Pulupandan mayor Luis Mondia Jr. in 2010, was armed with a .38 revolver and hand grenade and put up a fight.

Police Colonel Marlon Tayaba, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), welcomed the CHR probe. He said Enojo’s rights were not violated.

Enojo, a suspected member of a gun-for-hire group and No. 6 most wanted person in Iloilo province, died of multiple gunshot wounds.

At his house around 5:30 a.m. policemen attempted to serve an arrest warrant for a 2012 murder case but he resisted, according to Police Major Jonathan Pinuela of the IPPO.

Enojo tried to shoot policemen using a .38 revolver, said Pinuela.

“His gun malfunctioned but we also saw his other hand holding a grenade. We shot him before he could throw the grenade at us,” said Pinuela.

The police believed Enojo was a member of the Magno-Matillano gun-for-hire group operating in Iloilo province.

Enojo was tagged in the murder of former mayor Luis Mondia Jr. of Pulupandan on Feb. 17, 2010.

Mondia, running for mayor again in the May 2010 elections after a hiatus, was shot multiple times after hearing a late afternoon Ash Wednesday Mass at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral in Jaro, Iloilo City./PN
