THE Municipality of Pototan, Iloilo never ceases to amaze visitors every Yuletide season. We’re specifically referring to its extravagant display of holiday lights called Iwag Festival of Lights. Pototan Plaza is known as the “Christmas Capital of Western Visayas” because of this. Its obelisk, lagoon, historical marker, skating rink, stately mahogay and Indian trees, expansive and well-maintained greens dazzle with sparkling lights.

The brightly-lit Pototan Astodome crowns the town’s Iwag Festival of Lights at the public plaza. The lower seats can accommodate 2,500 persons while the bleachers, over 3,000 spectators.

Pototan Plaza was conceived by then Cong. Licurgo Tirador in 1992 and was successfully completed in 2006. The total cost of the project amounted to P45,645,000.

The plaza features a basketball court and other first-class facilities of international standards. The wood parquet covering the court is of imported maple wood. The electronic system is modern. There is adequate water supply and the comfort rooms are really designed for, well, comfort.

Pototan’s Iwag Festival of lights opened on Dec. 16, 2016 and will end on Jan. 2 after the New Year celebrations. It transforms the public plaza into a Christmas Village, says Mayor Tomas Peñaflorida.

But it’s a truly Pinoy village, what with its many tiangges and mouth-watering street food.

Stroll in the plaza and enjoy the creative display of Christmas lights. Mayor Peñaflorida strongly recommends viewing the lagoon with fountains in the evening.

Anyone can enjoy local rides, too./PN
