ILOILO City – The 31st National Migrants’ Sunday will be marked here for the first time today, the first Sunday of Lent.
The Archdiocese of Jaro headed by Archbishop Angel Lagdameo is leading the celebration at the Iloilo Catholic Charismatic Center (beside Santa Teresita Church) on De Leon Street, City Proper.
National Migrants’ Sunday is the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) expression of solidarity with the many concerns of more than 10 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as well as its response to the challenges posed by migration.
The Church noted that the OFWs contribute approximately $28 billion to the economy every year but the social cost is huge and staggering.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Children and women migrants, vulnerable and voiceless.”
The celebration hopes to create public and diocesan awareness about the Church’s ministry of concern for migration and Filipino migrants and be in solidarity with the families affected especially the children and those who are left behind.
Today’s activities will start with a Eucharistic celebration at 9 a.m. with Lagdameo as the main celebrant and Bishop Ruperto Santos, chair of the Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI), as homilist.
After the holy mass, a program will feature a talk on the rationale of the National Migrants’ Sunday to be given by Fr. Restituto Ogsimer, ECMI executive secretary, cultural presentations and solidarity messages from local government officials, national government agencies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders.
Fr. Renato Cuadras, parish priest of La Paz district, was designated chairman of the committee that will organize and facilitate the celebration today./PN
