MANILA – Cignal HD Spikers kept their unbeaten record in the 2017 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference after defeating F2 Logistics Cargo Movers, 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19, on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
Cignal moved up to solo first place in Pool A after winning all three group matches. They will join the top two finishers in Pool B, which comprised Foton, Generika-Ayala, Cocolife, and Cherrylume in Round 2.
Guimaras native Jovelyn Gonzaga led the way with 18 points, with 17 from attacks, while Rachel Anne Daquis added 16 points and Honey Royce Tubino submitted 15 for HD Spikers.
Cignal went on a strong start with an early 9-2 lead but F2 Logistics responded with a run to snatch the lead, 16-14. A tight game that saw scores tying at 24 ensued before Cherry Vivas took the set with back-to-back aces.
Both teams had a close exchange in the second set, with scores again tying at 17, before Cignal surged to a 23-19 lead on hits by Gonzaga. Cargo Movers rallied to within 23-21 before Honey Royce Tubino scored twice for a 2-0 set edge.
After losing the third set, Cignal responded in the fourth behind Gonzaga for a 7-2 lead, which later stretched to 14-8 before F2 Logistics trimmed it to 21-17. Gonzaga then took over late in the set with consecutive hits to win it for Cignal.
“I am glad that we were able to sweep our Pool B matches,” said Cignal head coach George Pascua. However, “it’s still a long way to go. It’s still a long way to go before we achieve our goal.”
Mary Joy Baron tallied 14 points while Kim Dy had nine markers for Cargo Movers, which suffered from a second straight setback in as many matches./PN
