City college may offer new course on disaster mgt

ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Community College (ICCC) plans to offer a four-year course on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) next school year.

ICCC administrator Ma. Mathilde Octavio, together with representatives from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), national government agencies and academe discussed the formulation of the curriculum for Bachelor of Science (BS) in DRRM recently.

Once the program is in place, there will be qualified DRRM practitioners and experts in the metropolis, she said.

“ICCC is already on its sixth year, and we think it is about time we add a program where students can enroll and at the same time help our city,” Octavio said.

ICCC currently offers free tuition for BS Office Administration and BS Travel Management.

The proposed program will enable students to help the city government strengthen its DRRM initiatives, said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.

“Before we ended our discussions, we agreed that we will submit our additional inputs for the curriculum before July 30 so that we can present it to CHED,” said Octavio.

There would be more discussions before the final output is submitted to CHED before Sept. 30.

“Hopefully, it will be approved in February next year in time for the class opening in June,” said Octavio. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta, Iloilo City PIO/PN)
