ILOILO City – A supply officer at the Mandurriao district police station was detained after shooting his stepbrother in Barangay Cagamutan Norte, Leganes, Iloilo.
Police Officer 2 Joel Aguirre turned himself in to the Leganes police and surrendered his service firearm after firing at Kenneth Poblacion.
Poblacion died of gunshot wounds on the head, chest and arms.
What transpired yesterday shocked Aguirre’s colleagues, including his immediate superior.
Chief Inspector Al Loren Bigay, Mandurriao police chief, described Aguirre – a 38-year-old resident of Barangay 1, San Miguel town – as a dedicated and hardworking policeman.
“Nagulat ako sa nangyari sa kanya. Mabait na pulis iyan. Pero hindi natin alam kung ano talaga ang nangyari,” said Bigay.
Poblacion suddenly went unruly. His mother called Aguirre and the Leganes police for help.
Aguirre went inside his stepbrother’s bedroom and tried to calm Poblacion down but the latter continued to be restive, initial investigation showed.
Suddenly, a series of gunshots were heard. Aguirre then exited the bedroom.
Poblacion was taken to the West Visayas State University Medical Center in Jaro. He died while undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, Senior Inspector Dadje Delima, Leganes police chief, said they suspected Poblacion was high on drugs. They will review their watch list of drug personalities to check if the victim was on it, he said.
Aguirre was hauled to the Leganes police station lockup cell. He surrendered his service firearm, a loaded 9mm pistol./PN
