ILOILO City – In this city the annual Brigada Eskwela of the Department of Education (DepEd) kicked off yesterday with the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) joining.
The yearly activity aims to prepare public schools for the resumption of classes in June.
ICPO spokesperson Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines told Panay News policemen helped Brigada Eskwela volunteers in various public schools.
“Pati paninlo, paminta, pamanday ga-offer man kami (and not just work for peace and order),” said Sangrines.
At Fort San Pedro National High School, the 77-year-old Arsenia Formacio volunteered for the Brigada Eskwela. She had a grandchild going to this school and wanted to help prepare the classrooms.
Meanwhile, 38-year-old Helen Joy Garcia of Barangay Veterans Village, City Proper urged parents to volunteer for their children’s sake.
Brigada Eskwela is a nationwide voluntary effort of teachers, parents, students, community members, and other organizations to do minor repairs and cleanups on their schools in preparation for the start of the school year.
This event began in 2003 as part of the Oplan Balik Eskwela Program and National Maintenance Week of DepEd. It encourages volunteers give out their time, effort, and even donate materials such as paint, cement, lumber and other materials, which could be used for minor repairs and building.
Donations from local corporations and businesses are given in kind.
The 2017 Brigada Eskwela in Western Visayas was launched Friday last week at the Cabatuan National Comprehensive High School in Cabatuan, Iloilo.
The launching, led by the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6, gathered schools division superintendents from five provinces of the region and other stakeholders.
This year’s Brigada Eskwela was themed, “Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan Para sa Handa at Ligtas na Paaralan.”
DepEd assistant secretary for legal and legislative affairs Tonisito Umali said Brigada Eskwela is “ensuring conditions of the schools.”
“Schools must be safe and their facilities ready for the classes,” he stressed./PN
