ILOILO City – Councilor Alan Zaldivar called out establishments with unavailable comfort rooms.
In a privilege speech during a recent city council regular session, Zaldivar reminded businesses of the provisions of City Ordinance (CO) No. 2016-20, or the Iloilo City Sanitary Toilet Ordinance.
“We are urging again our establishments to provide their customers access to comfort rooms as part of their service,” the councilor told Panay News.
Zaldivar, who chairs the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s committee on health, sanitation and hospital services, said some of his friends called his attention regarding the unavailability of toilets in some establishments.
In fact, Zaldivar said, he himself experienced this when he went to an establishment.
“It was not an isolated case. Relatives, friends and random individuals have told me having similar experiences,” said Zaldivar.
He noted that some establishments would say their comfort rooms were either being fixed, under maintenance or clogged.
“(This) makes me doubtful. Are they avoiding the task of cleaning their comfort rooms? They may have had traumatic experiences of improper use of their comfort rooms, thus they make them unavailable to their customers,” he said.
The city councilor also noted that under CO No. 2016-20 establishments are being checked and required to provide necessary amenities depending on their classification before being granted building permits./PN
