ILOILO City – A total of 120 members of disaster volunteer groups would have been trained on rope technician course or rappelling before the year ends.

A four-day rappelling seminar from Oct. 16 to 19 sought to strengthen disaster-response capacity of six disaster volunteer groups, said Rey Jason Gregorio, volunteer cluster head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC).

“This is part of the training to be provided by the city government to our volunteer groups for them to be better prepared during disaster,” he added.

Although the CDRRMC had not given them any equipment they could use during rescue, “at least we have provided them with training,” said Gregorio.

“Since they are on the augmentation side, there is a need for them to be equipped with skills in disaster-response,” he said.

The volunteer groups were Tiger Shark, Unicorn Rescue, ARSOV, Navy Reserve Rescue Group, and K9 Rescue Group.

They were also trained on radio handling, and first aid and basic life support by the Philippine Red Cross.

City hall also recently trained police auxiliaries on first aid and basic life support and rappelling. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
