BACOLOD City – Plastic packs of suspected shabu, among other contraband items, were seized during a search of detention cells in the Metro Bacolod District Jail in Barangay Handumanan yesterday.
Operatives from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Negros Island Region and the Regional Special Operations Task Group staged the “Oplan Greyhound” around 4 a.m.
The operation was prompted by a tip that several vehicles were transporting undetermined items to the district jail, according to Jail Inspector Mar Louie Salcedo, spokesperson for BJMP-Negros.
In the male dormitory, three plastic packs of suspected shabu were recovered from Cell No. 2, Cell No. 9 and Cell Masunurin.
Other recoveries included 13 cell phones, 27 disposable lighters, a pair of scissors, strips of aluminum foil, 10 cell phone chargers, seven cell phone batteries, SIM cards, memory cards, four improvised deadly weapons, playing cards, and P17,179.75 cash.
In the female dormitory, seized were four improvised deadly weapons, 11 pairs of scissors, disposable lighters, a bottle of Rugby solvent, nippers, and assorted digital video discs.
Salcedo said the district jail has 486 detainees in 10 cells.
Each cell houses an average of 48 inmates, but the ideal per-cell population is only 15, said the BJMP officer.
Salcedo said the district jail plans to install security cameras with the help of the local government./PN
