BACOLOD City – The city government wants to plant a million trees in 2017.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has committed a million seeds to Bacolod, Mayor Evelio Leonardia disclosed at a yearend meeting of the City Development Council.
“It has been my dream to make Bacolod green,” he told the meeting on Thursday, Dec. 1, “but we cannot achieve this without everybody’s help.”
Leonardia appealed to barangay officials and everyone who has vacant lots to participate in the tree-planting. City hall will provide the seeds, he said.
He believes the activity will “elevate consciousness [and] awareness [on] and love for trees” and “make the city a better tourist destination.”
Aside from the DENR, Leonardia said he will tap village officials and private organizations.
The city government of Tagum in Davao del Norte committed to provide palm tree seedlings, too, he said.
Planting all one million trees within 2017 is “doable, especially if the barangays will help,” said the mayor./PN
