BACOLOD City – The opening of classes in Negros Occidental public schools, supposedly yesterday, Aug. 29, did not push through.
Heavy rainfall generated by the enhanced southwest monsoon forced several local government units (LGUs) to suspend classes.
But Ian Arnold Arnaiz, spokesperson of the Department of Education (DepEd) Negros Occidental Schools Division, clarified that even in the absence of LGU-mandated class suspensions, school heads have the authority, too, to order the same.
Arnaez added such decisions are usually made in coordination with the Division Office.
He further pointed out that some schools were converted into evacuation centers.
LGUs that have declared class suspensions included the towns of Don Salvador Benedicto, Pulupandan and La Carlota City. (Watchmen Daily Journal)
