BACOLOD City — Classes at all levels in Barangay Biao, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental were suspended on January 30 as a precautionary measure following an armed encounter between government troops and suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
The clash occurred at around 2 a.m. in Sitio Apitong, Barangay Biao, involving troops of the 94th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army and the NPA. The incident reportedly caused fear and panic among residents in nearby communities.
Following the incident, Punong Barangay Junefel P. Aguillon issued Executive Order No. 001, Series of 2026, directing the temporary suspension of classes in all schools and day care centers within the barangay to ensure the safety and security of students, teachers, and school personnel.
The suspension covers Binadlan Elementary School, Bulwang Elementary School, Nasanagan Elementary School, Biao Elementary School, Biao National High School, and all day care centers in the barangay.
Aguillon said the move aims to prevent possible risks to learners and educators amid the prevailing security situation.
The suspension will remain in effect until lifted or amended by the Sangguniang Barangay, depending on developments in the area.
Residents were advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities as security forces continue their operations in the vicinity.
In an initial report, the military disclosed that there was a fatality during the firefight. The identity of the victim has yet to be released pending the ongoing investigation by authorities./PN
