Coin toss to decide SK chairs in 2 brgys

BACOLOD City – Today, a coin toss will decide who will be the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairpersons in barangays 21 and 26.

In Barangay 26, Charise Tayapad and Blessy Go got 168 votes each, the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) office said after the canvassing of votes.

City Election Officer Mavil Sia, however, failed to give the number of canvassed votes in Barangay 21 and who the SK candidates were.

Aside from the SK chairpersons in the two villages, a coin toss will also determine the ranking of four SK kagawads in Barangay 15.

They also got the same number of votes, Sia said. They will be ranked from Nos. 2 to 5.

A coin toss is a legal remedy to break a tie between only two candidates, according to Comelec.

It shall be called for only when the canvass of the election results shows a tie. The concerned candidates shall personally or through counsel attend the coin toss, Comelec said.

The winner of the coin toss will be proclaimed the winner as though they had garnered the highest number of votes.

Department of Interior and Local Government city director Ma. Joy Marideth Madayag said all SK winners must attend a one-day mandatory training before they can assume post in June.

This is in compliance with Republic Act 10742, or the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Act of 2015.

In the city, the training is slated on May 22 and 23 at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R).

The one-day training will start from 7 a.m. and will end at 5 p.m.

Among those who will attend the May 22 training at the UNO-R President’s Hall are SK officials from barangays 1,2,3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.

On the same day, SK officials from barangays 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30 will attend the training at the College of Engineering’s Audio-Visual Room.

On May 23, SK officials from barangays 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, Alangilan, Alijis, Banago, and Bata will attend the training at the College of Engineering’s Audio-Visual Room while those from barangays Cabug, Estefania, Felisa,  Granada, Handumanan, Mandalagan, Mansilingan, Montevista, Pahanocoy, Punta Taytay, Singcang-Airport, Sum-ag, Taculing, Tangub, Villamonte, and Vista Alegre, at the school’s President’s Hall./PN
