MANILA – Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Andres Bautista said he was open to staying put in his position if President Rodrigo Duterte wanted it.
In an interview yesterday, Bautista said he was leaving it up to Duterte to decide whether to accept his resignation or reject it and request him to stay a little longer in his post.
“I want him to have enough time to think over my resignation. He might ask if I could stay until a certain time,” Bautista said. “I don’t know what his decision would be. So out of respect for him, you give him options and let him decide what is best.”
He decided to make his resignation until the end of the year to allow the President to choose who he wanted to head the Comelec next and to have a smooth transition, added the elections chief.
On Wednesday, Bautista announced he was tendering his resignation effective Dec. 31, 2017. His wife Patricia accused him of having ill-gotten wealth.
Patricia claimed her husband had bank and real property documents and several passbooks that were not included in his 2016 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
The estranged wife of the Comelec chairman also alleged that Bautista “might have had, or currently has, misdealing and corrupt practices while in government service.”
Bautista denied all the allegations saying that his wife was being used by some personalities for their own agenda.
