Comelec on nuisance candidates: Stop making fun of COC filing

MANILA – A Commission on Elections official has urged some individuals to stop making fun of the certificate of candidacy (COC) filing.

Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said these individuals – most of whom were declared nuisance candidates before – must not take advantage of the democratic process.

“They just file their candidacy to make a mockery, para gawing katatawanan itong eleksyon o kaya to cause confusion,” Guanzon said. “Wala naman silang bona fide na intensyon to run, ‘yan po ang mga nuisance candidates.”

Pero ‘yun nga every time na may COC filing may ganyan dahil demokrasya po ito eh,” she added. “Sa akin, karapatan ‘yan ng citizen, basta natural born, able to read and write.”

According to Guanzon, during the 2016 national elections, the Comelec were able to remove around 90 nuisance candidates from 140 aspirants but they are expecting to cut more this time.

Siguro aabot din tayo ng 100 nuisance candidates this time,” Guanzon said. “Ayokong dagdagan ang definition ng nuisance candidates kasi dapat inclusive ang election. Lahat pwedeng tumakbo.”

During the start of COC filing on Thursday, several nuisance bets showed up, including those claiming to be former lovers of TV host Kris Aquino and former Communications Assistant Secretary Margaux “Mocha” Uson./PN
