CEBU City – The management of the Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) urged bus operators to subject their drivers to “surprise drug tests” before and during All Saints’ and All Soul’s Days.
The CSBT management said the measure will be for the safety of passengers.
Joey Herrera, CSBT operations manager, on Saturday claimed that some bus drivers use illegal drugs to keep themselves “energized” for hours of long-distance driving.
Herrera said fatigue or exhaustion must not be an excuse to use drugs.
He added that it will endanger not only the passengers but the driver as well.
CSBT has conducted several surprise drug tests among drivers before, each yielding positive results, Herrera said.
Herrera believed that it’s time for the bus operators to initiate the tests.
He said the drug tests must start next week.
Herrera encouraged the public to cooperate with the conduct of drug tests, especially if they will be scheduled on Nov. 1 and 2.
“It’s for your own safety,” Herrera said.
He also advised bus operators to avoid “overburdening” their drivers with additional travel schedules./PN
