ILOILO City – Authorities staged simultaneous “greyhound” inspections at the Iloilo City District Jail in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district and the Iloilo District Jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo yesterday.
It was the first in the region since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office in June.
They scoured for possible contraband — and they found a lot, according to Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, regional director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
“Sa loob ng bilangguan, ang mga inmates nagiging innovative,” Tayaba said. “Advanced sila mag-isip kung paano (ipuslit ang contraband) despite the strict (supervision) by BJMP (Bureau of Jail Management and Penology) personnel.”
Operatives from the Police Regional Office 6, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Philippine Coast Guard helped in the inspection.
Tayaba clarified that the inspections were planned but the jail wardens were not informed.
He dismissed the idea that BJMP personnel helped smuggle the contraband into the detention facilities.
“We did not have indicators on that,” he said. “Sana wala (pero) sa nakikita natin ay wala namang indicator (that they were involved).”
Contraband items were recovered from Buildings 1, 2 and 3 at the Iloilo City District Jail and Dormitories 1, 4, 6, and 8 at the Iloilo District Jail around 4:55 a.m.
They included bladed and pointed tools like knives, cutters and scissors; lighters; electrical wires; mobile phones and accessories; bottles of solvent (colloquially rugby); playing cards; hammers; and kitchen utensils, among many others.
At the Iloilo City District Jail an improvised tooter was found outside a cell. It will be tested if it was used, said Tayaba.
“Iyong mga bladed weapons ginagamit sa paggawa ng handicraft,” he said.
At the Iloilo District Jail, authorities also recovered at least three plastic packs containing suspected shabu and several drug paraphernalia. These will be tested, too, said the CIDG regional chief.
All the recoveries were taken to the CIDG regional office at Camp Martin Delgado in Fort San Pedro, City Proper./PN
