ILOILO City – Policemen will continue to secure the family of slain overseas domestic helper Joanna Demafelis in Sitio Cordero, Barangay Ferraris, Sara, Iloilo, according to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).
Demafelis was buried on March 3 yet but Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, IPPO director, declined to say when his men would pull out from Sitio Cordero.
VIPs keep on coming to express their sympathies to the Demafelis family, according to Tayaba.
Among the VIPs that have visited the family were President Rodrigo Duterte, Labor secretary Silvestre Bello III and Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
Members of the Demafelis family themselves asked the IPPO for security. They were worried about their safety considering the financial windfall the family had received from the government, said Tayaba.
Joanna left for Kuwait in 2016 and was found dead inside her employers’ freezer just this Feb. 9.
Among the government agencies that released assistance to the Demafelis family were the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Department of Social Welfare and Development and Department of Labor and Employment.
“Tinitingnan natin ang legitimacy ng claim nila that dubious personalities have visited them,” said Tayaba.
He said he had suggested to the family to keep in the bank all the financial assistance they have received, though he stressed that the IPPO had not monitored any threat.
“Kasi kung tanungin sino ang nag-threat, saan galing at paano nakuha, wala namang masabi. Rinig-ring lang naman nila,” said Tayaba.
Joanna’s brother Joejet said he received an anonymous text message advising him to be doubly conscious of his security.
During a visit to Joanna’s wake on Feb. 22, Presidential Spokesperson Roque said the Demafelis family would get insurance coverage of US$15,000; that the President vowed to complete the unfinished house of the family, redeem the mortgaged lot of the family, and grant college scholarship to a Demafelis sibling.
On Feb. 24, officials of manpower recruitment agencies accredited to send OFWs to Kuwait visited the wake of Joanna to personally express their sympathies and turn over to the Demafelis family their agencies’ combined donations of P200,000./PN
