BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. has not yet issued his official take on the planned shift to a federal government in the country but expressed his support to the idea of having a “unified region.”
Marañon said he wants the Negros Island Region back, gathering support from local officials and residents from Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.
This despite him admitting that there are still “many things” that need to be studied on the proposed form of government that the President Rodrigo Duterte’s19-man consultative committee has created.
Marañon said the proposed government is “federal and presidential.”
If what he heard was correct, the proposed federal states will be based on the current regional setup of the country, the governor added.
This will make Negros Occidental a part of the Western Visayas state and Negros Oriental, a part of the Eastern Visayas state.
Marañon stressed that the two Negros provinces must not be separated, adding that having the Negros Island state is “better.”
“I am still hopeful. When there is life, there is hope,” Marañon said.
He also confirmed that Art Aguilar – a member of the Duterte’s consultative committee – has advised him and other key local officials in Negros Island to show solidarity in lobbying the unification of the two Negros provinces./PN
