ILOILO City – Councilor Miguel Treñas has publicly confirmed his intention to run for congressman of Iloilo City in the 2028 elections, formally signaling the Treñas political camp’s succession plans and setting the stage for a possible high-profile congressional race in the city.
Treñas said his decision came after consultations with political leaders and residents across Iloilo City, who he claimed have urged him to seek a seat in the House of Representatives.
The declaration strengthens earlier indications that the younger Treñas is being positioned for a congressional bid. He had previously acknowledged plans to seek the post in February, while his sister, Mayor Raisa Treñas, also recently confirmed his intention during a separate interview.
Despite expressing confidence in his plans, Treñas acknowledged that political circumstances could still change before the official filing of certificates of candidacy.
“Ang akon nga desisyon subong, mapadalagan ako congressman. Pero indi pa ini ang right time sang eleksyon kay madugay pa. Wala pa gani filing kag madamo pa sang puwede matabo,” he said.
Asked whether his decision was already final, Treñas replied: “As of now, amo ini ang akon desisyon.
Treñas also addressed speculation regarding the political future of his father, former Iloilo City mayor Jerry Treñas, one of the city’s most influential political figures.
According to the councilor, the former mayor has yet to indicate any intention to seek elective office again and is currently focusing on advising family members serving in government.
Ara gihapon ang iya heart for public service,” Treñas said.
“As of now, wala pa siya nakahambal kun mapadalagan siya. Ara si Mayor Raisa, ara man ako. As of now, wala pa gid siya desisyon kun ano ang iya himuon,” he added./PN
