ILOILO City – A man and his wife were arrested in Barangay Ermita, Dumangas, Iloilo for illegal gambling.
The 46-year-old Abelardo Defensor and spouse Maribeth, both residents of Barangay Maquina, Dumangas, were caught by policemen soliciting bets for the illegal numbers game bookies.
Around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, the couple were taken to the Dumangas police station.
Recovered from the Abelardos were pieces of paper, pen and P280 cash in various denominations.
The suspects face a charge for violating Republic Act 9287 that outlaws illegal gambling. Under this law, the Abelardos are considered collectors or agents (also called cabo, cobrador or coriador) – persons who collect, solicit or produce bets in behalf of their principal for any illegal numbers game and usually in possession of gambling paraphernalia.
Section 3 (c) of the law punishes collectors with imprisonment of from eight years to 10 years./PN
