MANILA – The Wangs Basketball Couriers made sure it wouldn’t suffer another endgame meltdown as it scored a 98-93 win over the AMA Online Education Titans in 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Monday at the JCSGO Gym in Quezon City.
Coming from a heartbreaking 98-97 defeat to Team Batangas, where it lost a 24-point lead, the Couriers hanged on to the lead from start to finish to snap its five-game losing skid and improve to a 2-5 win-loss slate.
The Couriers opened the match with a 13-4 lead behind John Von Tamberling and Rey Publico. The Titans came to within three but the Couriers pulled away anew at 26-19 on a Mark Montuano hit.
The Titans continued its run early in the second frame but the Couriers was quick to douse on their opponents rally as hits by Negrense John Tayongtong increased the lead to 48-33.
The Titans then went on a strong run in the third to snatch the lead at 63-59. However, the Couriers had a quick answer from Tamberling to retake a 76-73 edge heading into the final stanza.
The Titans came close for the last time at 78-all before the Couriers went on a huge finishing run courtesy of Publico, Cedrick Labing-isa and Marlon Gomez for a 96-86 lead with just two minutes remaining in the game.
Tamberling top-scored with 21 points, including two three-point conversions, while Publico chipped in with double-double 18 points and 11 rebounds for the veteran-laden Couriers.
