BACOLOD City – Tropical depression “Agaton” brought torrential rains that caused erosion in the national highway in Calatrava, Negros Occidental.
The erosion lead to a crack, which forced the local government to close the thoroughfare.
Councilor Honey Boy Goc-ong, chairman of the town’s Search, Rescue and Retrieval Task Force Unit, said a crack extending up to 75 meters was found along the road in Sitio Ani-e, Barangay Dolis and Sitio Antubayan, Barangay Castellano.
Residents discovered the once short crack on Dec. 31, 2017, Goc-ong said. It grew longer as “Agaton” dumped heavy rains in the area from Jan. 1 to 2, 2018, he added.
The rains resulted to the “liquefaction” of the road’s foundation, the councilor explained.
Motorists were advised to take a different route as road barriers were set up in the area.
The road is a major thoroughfare from Calatrava to Bacolod City, Goc-ong said.
The local government of Calatrava has already coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways.
Repair activities are expected to be conducted as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Silay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported a minor landslide incident along the national highway leading to Barangay Patag, Silay City, Negros Occidental.
The rains are also seen to have caused the landslide.
Silay City’s local engineering office immediately conducted clearing operations. Traffic was back to normal in the area after a few hours./PN
